The primary idea behind the salmon print is still the murals I’m aiming to install, and can be seen in the video on the Our Rives are Paved page. I’ve worked largely alone for years, and I’ve missed banter and camaraderie and the ideas growing out of it. As I printed with Jane, Olivia and Sam, of Atelier Meridian, we started talking about possibilities with the block. Color. More color. Inspired by years of painting and exploring color, I ended up carving a second wood block, allowing us to print one registered over the other, with a week between to allow the first layer to dry. The color mixing and meticulous inking are much more time consuming - essentially painting the blocks- and is repeated for each impression. But it has yielded a print we are all really exited about. Color over color, both combining and revealing between the marks of the original block, creating a richer image.
The print is to scale of the average size of a huge strain of chinook that ascended the Columbia River system before it was dammed. Layers of reds and yellows and greens, reminiscent of the spawning colors of the magnificent fish.
